Too often, our films are reduced to a definition of being a ‘movie for the masses’. Too little attention is paid to geniuses like Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt or Shyam Benegal. Living and working in Hollywood, we have come to realize that Indian cinema is perceived as merely a spectacle of colors, song and dance by the rest of the world. It is generally not understood as ‘meaningful cinema’ and it is not a frequent subject of film studies. Ours is the largest film industry in the world and yet why don’t we make the cut? Maybe, we as an audience, must share some responsibility. Maybe we need to voice our opinion and stop resigning to the banality that has become our hallmark.
