workshop, Market Forge now represents the "Great American Company," firmly rooted in the food service industry with pride in its products, facilities and people.
Beckwith came to Boston, MA with only the knowledge of his hands and the ironwork and locksmith trades. His shop on Barrett Street quickly became recognized for excellence in the production of special order ironworks and highly skilled craftsmanship.
Next door to the shop was a large meat-packing plant. Its owner had realized the unsanitary conditions created by wooden shelving units and called on Beckwith to produce galvanized racks, thus the beginning of the Market Forge foodservice tradition.
Beckwith's basic design, slotted shelves to permit airflow, sanitary tubular uprights and knocked-down movable construction, are still in use around the world today. It was through this type of manufacturing that Beckwith's shop became known as the "Forge" in the market district. Market Forge Industries carries the moniker to this day.
In 1909, The Market Forge Company began to outgrow its small facilities and moved to Chelsea, MA. Just seven years later, Market Forge broke ground in Everett, MA. and now resides in Burlington, Vermont.
In later years, the company branched out and diversified into small manufactured metal goods, like rear-bumper luggage and bicycle carriers, kiddie cars, florists' racks and the earliest baby seats for automobiles.
The 1920's saw the emergence of The Market Forge Company as a national entity, specializing in meat racks, fur and rug racks and refrigeration equipment.
Toward the end of the 1920's, the company began fabricating many products out of stainless steel, including their cast iron vegetable steamer. The result was the first modern steam cooker.
In the 1970's, Market Forge sold many of its divisions and focused on becoming the premier steam equipment manufacturer in the world. The company added several products, like steam jacketed kettles, convection ovens and tilting skillets, many of which are still available today, to their existing line of steam cooking equipment.
The ideals upon which Market Forge was founded are as alive today as they were in 1896, through the dedication of each employee to manufacture the finest products in the steam cooking industry. When you purchase a Market Forge product, you are purchasing a piece of the tradition and reputation of each Market Forge owner and their commitment to excellence that began nearly 100 years ago.
