WHO WE ARE
Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates is a non-profit corporation with more than 1,300 employees, all committed to changing lives for the better through higher education. We’re one of the country’s leading guarantors and servicers of student loans, serving millions of borrowers, the U.S. Department of Education, more than 6,000 schools, and 1,100 lenders nationwide. We provide support to make higher education accessible, the financial aid process simpler, and the possibility of paying for college real. We know student loans, inside and out.

You can’t choose your relatives, and you didn’t choose us. For that matter, you were assigned to us, too, by the U.S. Department of Education (we just call them ED). So we’re in this together, kind of like family—here because you wanted to go to school and needed help, and because we’re dedicated to our mission of helping students. We want you to successfully repay your student loans because defaulting on them can have far-reaching effects on your financial health and your ability to get loans for other things in the future.

HOW YOU CAN TURN TO US
It’s not easy to figure out how student loans work, to keep all of your loans (student loans and otherwise) straight, and eventually pay them all off. We’re here to help you make sense of it—from setting up in-school budgets to reduce the amount of debt you take on, to walking you through graduation (or withdrawal from school) and what comes after—usually for quite a long time. We work hard to communicate with you so that you know what to expect, and where you can go for help.

When you’re having trouble making payments, we can help you understand how your federal student loans fit into the mix. We’ll explain how student loans are different from other loans and show you options that will help you stay as financially healthy as possible. The emails and letters you get from us will help you know what to expect, and will nudge you to stay in touch and let us know what’s going on, so we can connect you with help that may be available to you.
